Western Union awarded first-of-a-kind SAFETY Act by DHS for its Counter-Financing of Terrorism System

Aluma would like to congratulate our client The Western Union Company for successfully achieving SAFETY Act Designation for its Counter-Financing of Terrorism System. Aluma is proud to have served Western Union in pursuing this SAFETY Act award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Technology is an internally deployed program, comprised of policies, staff, and software, for vetting transactions across Western Union's money services network to deter, prevent, detect, and mitigate the financing of acts of terrorism.

This Designation represents the first-of-its-kind SAFETY Act award for a counter-financing of terrorism technology, marking a major milestone for the SAFETY Act program. The fight against terrorism does not begin and end with guards and physical security measures; it also extends to the financial frontlines, where the funding of terrorist activities takes root long before an attack is ever carried out. As a global leader in cross-border payments and money transfer services, Western Union's achievement demonstrates that SAFETY Act protections can extend beyond physical security programs to the systems safeguarding the financial infrastructure underpinning global commerce.

With this award, DHS recognizes the significant efforts Western Union has made to counter the financing of terrorism across its network.
